Qualcomm has been the lonely winner on the XR devices market for the last 7 years. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 (the chip that powers the Meta Quest) was released on November 17, 2016. Almost all standalone devices released since then have used a Qualcomm SoC.
But, 2024 looks like it is going to be the year of Apple’s Spatial Computing.
The market has dropped the XR naming very fast. And now everybody is expected to use Spatial Computing instead of VR, AR or XR. We feel compelled to do the same. Spatial Computing is the first keyword of 2024.
Qualcomm still wants to beat Apple. They have just released the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2. This chip is powerful enough that companies like Sony, Siemens, Google and Samsung are going to use it to power their devices.
We are happy to see that the Spatial Computing market is becoming lively and are looking forward to the release of the Apple Vision Pro. We expect a lot of people interested in building new applications, and porting their existing applications for the device. And we are also looking forward to study the Sony and Google devices.
It really looks like it’s going to be a good year for XR, sorry Spatial Computing.
